ANIMAL SPECIES
There are about 8.7 million different species but only 1.3 million species have been recorded or known.
Over the years there are species that become extinct and others that are discovered. The number of species has varied considerably in the 150 years since Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species” was published in 1859. But the scientific community goes to great lengths to create a census of all animals.
Types of species in the world
The taxonomic system of classification of
species differentiates between: genus, family, order, class and kingdom.
The classification by kingdom, it is calculated that there are the following species:
- Animals: 7.77 million of which 953,434 have been cataloged
- Fungi: 611,000, 43,271 are collated
- Plants: 298,000, 215,644 have been registered
- Protozoa: 36,400, 8,118 have been described
- Algae and molds: 27,500, 13,033 have been registered
- How many animals are there in the world
- Almost a million animals have been registered but it is estimated that there are more than 7.77 million.
What species of animal is the most abundant on earth? Most of the species is made up of insects with 915,000 species. Spiders and snails rank second and third with 92,900 and 93,000 species.
To register a species it is necessary to carry out an extensive study based on the DNA of each one, thus identifying all the variations. Therefore classifying all species is very complicated.
Several studies determine that many of the species will disappear even before they are identified. According to the IUCN Red List, there are currently 19,817 species threatened by extinction, including 41% amphibians, 25% mammals, 13% birds and 30% conifers.
